Tanya Still Getting No Respect

As Singapore’s National Day fast approaches, I’m reminded of Tanya’s contribution to the 2001 NDP - Where I Belong (属于). I couldn’t find a picture of Tanya from that event, but decided to give my subtle pictorial commentary asking why Singapore needs to delude itself as a military state every year during this time.
But honestly, Tanya is not as well-received in her homeland as she is overseas in Taiwan! Ever since 1997 when her first English album sold out to critical acclaims, she has had to fight for her spotlight in the hearts of Singaporeans. While most do acknowledge her skills and artistic credentials, she still struggles to gain visiblity. Take for example, this infuriating interview story!
It’s been a while since Tanya’s been invited to do the National Day song. Don’t get me wrong! I love that other talented artists are also getting exposure, but I wish Singapore would acknowledge her recent win at the Golden Melody Awards. The 2006 song will be sung by Kaira Gong. You can also download past National Day songs from NDP.org.sg; Tanya’s contributions are also there!
